About
Northern Perspective is an English-language publication about northern public life: the ideas, words, memories and institutions through which people describe and understand the North. We write for curious readers who want more than a ready-made regional story.
What we cover
Our subjects include regional identity, public language, shared memory, civic and cultural institutions, and the ways customs and ideas change. We favour questions that can be explored through explanation, comparison and careful attention to how a claim is framed.
Many Norths, many viewpoints
Northern places are varied, and the meaning of north depends on context. We avoid treating the region as a single character or assuming that one experience represents everyone. Our aim is to make room for distinctions and to explain the terms we use.
How we write
We aim for lively, clear essays that respect a reader's intelligence without requiring specialist knowledge. We separate interpretation from established fact, explain uncertainty where it matters, and welcome careful disagreement.
A northern view, open to question
The North is not one story, and no single voice can stand for it. We look closely at the language, memories and institutions that shape its many public lives.
